The Importance of Achieving Work-Life Balance in Office Design

We are all aware that the work culture of our time is much different than the one of our parents. Not only do we have access to modern technology that makes our lives and jobs much easier, but we are also changing the way we see our jobs. Very few people these days will “live to work,” and a lot of us are trying to find a way to balance out our work life with our “real” life. There are many ways you can do this, but did you know that your office design can help you find that balance?

You don’t want to get sick

One of the most important reasons why you should find a good work-life balance in the office is because office work can have a negative impact on your health. It’s not just the dangers of remaining sedentary and sitting for too long, but office work can take its toll on your mental health as well. Australian National University published a study that shows that working more than 39 hours a week poses a risk to a person’s wellbeing. That being said, we all choose to work long hours every now and then to make ends meet, and when that happens, it’s important to feel good in your office.

Office

Having a quiet space

While some may feel that quiet places and spaces are only good for taking naps, remember that there are people who need peace and quiet to work when they’re feeling stressed. Having such spaces in the office is important for those times when you feel overwhelmed and want to escape noise so you can focus on the task at hand. Most importantly, these should be the spaces without interruptions – once a person goes there, it’s best to leave them undisturbed. Also, such places are great for short breaks and meditation, as well as for resting the eyes and “recharging the brain.” Depending on the size of your office, such quiet spaces can take up an entire floor or a single cubicle with acoustic furniture pods and seating.

Being comfortable

The human resources department (HR) in your company has to take care of many things, and one of them is workplace health. Looking for ergonomic furniture is not seen as a luxury anymore, especially since this is a good way to make employees more active during their office hours. Comfortable office chairs are important, and there are different types of desks since it’s clear that one size doesn’t fit all. What is more, you should never have to struggle to find a pen, marker, paper, or a snack, as these are the things you need. You can find office supplies at Winc, so you know you always have everything you might need in the supply room or your drawer. You don’t want the lack of material to stop you from doing your job properly.

Office

Being active contributes as well

We mentioned the importance of quiet spaces in the office, but we shouldn’t forget about movement and activity either. When you live in the city and work in the office, most of your activity comes from commuting and/or gym time. Stretching and being physically active does wonders for one’s body and improves ergonomics and productivity. Give your employees enough room to walk around, stretch, and even dance – set up a ping pong table, swings, a slide, or a basketball hoop. If possible, you can arrange to have an instructor over once a week for dance, yoga, or Tai Chi classes.

Why this balance is important

Let’s face it – when you offer people a chance to work from home, they are going to take it. As comfortable as working from home may be for employees, employers have reasons to want people to work from the office too. Working remotely might be comfortable, but being able to spend time with your coworkers and exchange ideas in meetings or over cups of coffee during a break is invaluable. Back in 2013, former Yahoo chief Marissa Meyer wrote a memo where she pointed out that impromptu team meetings and interaction with coworkers lead to the best ideas and insights in the workplace.

Even though we are constantly trying to separate office and home life, it isn’t always easy to do so. Office designs are made to make you feel more comfortable in the office and to help you do your job better and residential home design is one of the ways to achieve it. When you feel like you’re home even when you’re away from home, you’ll be more likely to give your maximum and show great results.
